This course was an experimental class that used the method of "experiential learning" approach to teach the students what they would learn in class. The central topic was "Tales of Two Cities", focusing on the two most important cities in Japanese culture and history: Kyoto and Tokyo (Edo). This class was not conducted the typical professor-student lecture style, but in the "experiential learning" approach, where the students would research on specific topics of their choice, and teach their peers, and supervising professor on their topics. Thus the students, under the professor's minimal guidance, would create their own visual and textual narratives of these cities, working together to locate, read and analyze material available in various collections, and would use all elements of communication -- visual, oral, and written -- to present their findings. In essence, the goal of this course provides students with the opportunity to gain the most important skills needed to be successful after graduation, while using an academic topic as the focus.
The students were separated into groups from the beginning of the semester and stayed with that group until the end of the term. Their goal was to create two 60-minute lectures on a specific topic and to create a final project that was directed towards the general public.
The final projects are the manifestation of the skills that the students have learned throughout the course, and showcases topics that they found interesting to them.

The first group to present their final project was the Heian-kyo group, who chose to virtually rebuild a section of the Imperial capital Heian-Kyo (794-1181) using a Minecraft Adventure map. Set in a fantastical version of the Daidairi, "Greater Imperial Palace" - which was a large chunk of the city reserved for the Japanese elite - it features historic sites, real people from the approximate time period, and a fun narrative! We hope you enjoy checking it out and learning about some cool secrets!
